Scytl runs the first ever eVoting election in the French Ministry of the Interior

Barcelona & Paris, January 7, 2015Scytl, the worldwide leader in secure online voting and election modernization, today announced the successful closing of the first ever online voting election run by the French Ministry of the Interior. This is a milestone not only for the French Ministry of the Interior, but for France as country: with 3 ministries – Foreign Affairs, Education and now Interior – leveraging online voting and leading the way in the strategic uptake of the online channel.

The objective of the pilot run by the French Ministry of the Interior was to assess the validity of eVoting as an alternative to traditional voting. In order to ensure a clear understanding of the implications of deploying eVoting, the project was run with the full end-to-end process, including full independent auditing, detailed verification and full dynamic security testing.

Key highlights from the election itself include:

  • Election details: the process was included two employee representatives body elections run simultaneously with two separate electoral boards composed of 6 members and two administrative boards with two members for each one.
  • Voting channels: voters could vote online via their PCs (office or home), smartphones and tablets. In addition, kiosks were deployed specifically for voters with no internet access.
  • Voting credentials delivery: two parallel processes were enabled allowing voters to pick up their credentials in a central location for the local employee representatives body election and were delivered online via a One Time Link for the national employee representatives body elections.
  • Election participation: given an over 44% participation level, the benchmarking project proved a success.

With three ministries leveraging online voting for binding elections, France is leading the way in the strategic uptake of the secure online channel for ongoing elections. In addition to the Ministry of Interior, Scytl Online Voting has been leveraged by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs to securely run 5 elections since 2009 and the Ministry of Education with its recent implementation of Scytl´s secure technology for the largest public binding election ever carried out over the Internet.
