OUR NAME
Named for security & innovation
The Scytale is considered to be the first cryptographic tool, consisting of a message written on a strip of parchment and wound around a cylinder. The ancient Greeks, and in particular the Spartans, are said to have used this cipher to communicate during military campaigns, as it was both fast and not prone to mistakes.
Scytl embodies the innovative nature of the Scytale, reinventing technology to improve election processes through using enhanced security measures.
BACKGROUND
A commitment to research & security from the beginning
Research Group Spin-Off
Scytl was founded in 2001 as a spin-off from a leading research group at the Autonomous University of Barcelona that had pioneered research on security solutions for the electronic voting industry since 1994. This scientific group produced the first two European PhD theses on electronic voting security and numerous international publications in the field of application-level cryptography and e-voting.
Unique Technology
Scytl’s current patent portfolio is composed of more than 40 international patents and patent applications related to security as it is applied to election processes, giving Scytl the largest patent portfolio in the industry. Scytl’s technology and software is also protected by copyrights.

Scytl’s technology has been consistently found to be secure, accurate and reliable through numerous audits by independent international organizations and academic experts in the field of election administration. These organizations include the French Security Agency, Price Waterhouse Coopers, the Center for Advanced Security Research, the US Air Force Institute of Technology, Trondheim University in Norway, Fribourg University in Switzerland, and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, both in Spain.
